The definition of self-improvement: Self-improvement is the improvement of one’s knowledge, status, or character by one’s own efforts. It’s the quest to make ourselves better in any and every facet of life.

Self improvement
“I will set realistic goals for myself”

For most of us the path to self-improvement starts by setting a specific and actionable goal.  When deciding on your goals and what you want to achieve, think about the reason you want to work towards that goal. It should be something you want to do for its own sake, not for something or someone else. Try to choose something that excites you, envisioning the path towards your goal being motivating and inspiring.

How do I set a goal for myself?
• Think of something you want to do/achieve and write it down.
• Describe your goal specifically. For example: “I want to lose weight and fit into my size 12 jeans by June this year” not “I don’t want to be overweight anymore”

Deadline
Creating a deadline for your goals will help you prioritise and focus on what’s most important. Deadlines assist you to organise your tasks in order of priority, so that you are only working on objectives that move you closer towards your goal.

Networking
Network with people who are working on the same goals as you. Thoughtful networking provides a focused way to talk to people about your goals. Done right, it can help you obtain referrals, advice, information, and support.

Reflection
“I will learn from my mistakes”

By reflecting on past successes and mistakes, you will be able to evaluate what went well and what went wrong, how you can do things differently in the future, and where you still have room for growth.

Reflection helps to build emotional self-awareness. By taking the time to ask yourself the important questions, you gain a better understanding of your emotions, strengths, weaknesses and driving factors.

Examples of questions you can ask yourself are:
• How can I measure the progress, timeline and success of my goals?
• Are my goals both realistic and motivating?
• How will I react if I don’t achieve one of my goals?
• What can I do to motivate myself to accomplish my goals?

Finally, remember that any movement in a positive direction is progress no matter how small or how long it takes. It is better to follow a plan for self-improvement that takes a bit more time than to try for a quick cure. The time and effort you invest will be rewarded in the end.
